Lutsk
For the modern tourist Ukrainian Lutsk is very interesting. Being the cradle of Ukrainian statehood, the center of the struggle for independence for over two centuries, the capital of Volyn (historical region of Ukraine), and a beautiful city, Lutsk is able to interest and captivate.
The city of Lutsk was founded in 1085 and is considered to be one of the oldest cities in Ukraine. Lutsk was a part of several old Slavonic states, including Kievan Rus and Galich-Volyn principality. In each of these states Luck played an important role. After joining of Volyn lands into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania the city for some time even became the center of the largest state of medieval Europe. Prince Lyubar chose Lutsk to be his residence.
Just to the time of the reigning of Lithuanian prince relates the main sight of Lutsk - prince’s castle. Its construction lasted for more than 40 years and ended in 1340. The Castle of Lutsk (or Upper Castle) is considered to be one of the most important sights not only of the city, but of the whole Ukraine.
Except the castle in Lutsk there are lots of other interesting buildings: numerous monasteries (Brigits, Jesuits, Sharits, Trinitarians), the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (17 century), Pokrovskaya Church (15 century), and also the main cathedral of the city - the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
Closeness to the Ukrainian-Polish border makes the city one of the major transit centers. Transit tourism is the main income item of the city’s tourist industry.
