Grodno

Grodno is an ancient Belarusian town, the center of a large Polish diaspora in Belarus, a place with fantastic architecture and history.

Grodno is situated 300 km northwest of the capital of Belarus, the city of Minsk. The age of Grodno is over 800 years. The first mention of it belongs to the 12 century. During its history of Grodno was the capital of the principality of Grodno and also a city of various states: the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Rzeczpospolita, and the Russian Empire. For a long time Grodno was the residence of the Great Lithuanian princes and Polish kings.

Despite the destruction, devastation and many wars Grodno managed to preserve its architecture. Today it is one of the most solid and colorful cities of Belarus. Grodno is a kind of crossroads of cultures: European and Slavic. It is replete with monuments both of typical western and eastern architecture. They are mostly Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, that fill the center of Grodno.

In addition to its amazing beautiful and ancient ceremonial buildings in Grodno there are secular monuments that are no less interesting. Making a tour of Grodno, you should visit the area «Gorodnitsa», which is dominated by the 18th century buildings, as well as Stanislav estate and home of Maximovich, the architectural monuments of the epoch of classicism.

Museums of Grodno, as in any other city, are considered to be a business card; a living history of Grodno that the city is ready to share with tourists. Perhaps, the most curious of Grodno museums can is a museum of history of religion, the exposition of which is in the 18th century restored palace.
