Castle on the Pieskowa Mountain was opened after the reconstruction

(News from Poland)

One of the most beautiful castles in the vicinity of Krakow, the castle on the Pieskowa Mountain has been recently opened after a thorough restoration and invites tourists to a fascinating tour of the renovated halls.

The castle on Pieskowa Mountain (Zamek w Pieskowej Skale) is located in one of the most picturesque places among the rocks of Cracow-Czestochowa Upland only 27 kilometers north of the Polish cultural capital of Krakow. Castle on the Pieskowa Mountain towering on a high limestone mountain is one of the most beautiful and majestic medieval fortresses located on the most famous Polish tourist route consisting of 25 medieval fortifications – “Tract of Eagle Nests” (Szlak Orlich Gniazd).

The castle on the Pieskowa Mountain, which is a great work in the Renaissance style, was built in the first half of the 14th century by the Polish king Kazimierz the Great, and is part of the fortifications on the border of Silesia. Since the early 15th century castle on Pieskowa Mountain served as the residence of such a famous Polish families as Szafrańcowie, Zebrzydowski and Wielopolskich who reconstructed, rebuilt and updated the castle for hundreds of years. In the XVIII century the castle on Pieskowa Mountain was turned into a royal hunting house, was named Muzeum Polski and was extremely popular among the nobility of the Polish Kingdom. Since the end of the XIX century here was located an exclusive restaurant, and after the Second World War the castle was handed over to the treasury.

In 1970 the renovated castle on the Pieskowa Mountain was transformed into a branch of the famous Museum of Southern Poland - Wawel Royal Castle in Krakow. Unfortunately, violent and ruthless history of the castle did not allow preserving the original historical and art collections and in the museum has recreated a new exhibition.

In the past few years the castle on the Pieskowa Mountain was closed to the public for a thorough restoration. Today, the museum is re-opened to the tourists, inviting guests to see the magnificent autumn castle park and grandeur of a medieval bastion as well as to enjoy the updated museum collection.
