Prague Ruzine Airport (IATA code: PRG) is the largest international airport of the Czech Republic on October 30 published the data on the passenger traffic for 9 months of 2009. According to the report published on the airport’s site on the number of passengers passed through the airport terminal for the past nine months declined by more than 10% over the same period in 2008.
For the Prague airport the current decrease in the number of passengers by 10% seems not so catastrophic. It should be taken into consideration that for the first half of 2009 the number of passengers in the main airport in Prague decreased by 14%. But the most disastrous was the first quarter of 2009 when the passenger traffic declined by almost 20%. To some extent the situation was improved by the last summer season, which for the Czech Republic has been more successful than it was anticipated.
Summer for many carriers is the hottest time, which determines the success of the whole year. For the Ruzine Airport in 2009 the determination point was the decline of the charter passenger traffic, which for the January-September period amounted to about 19%, while the decrease of passenger traffic on scheduled flights that pass through the Prague airport dropped by 9%.
In total the largest airport of Prague for the 9 months of 2009 received about 8 970 000 passengers, while during the same period of 2008 the number of passengers exceeded the figure of 9 980 000 people.
Ruzine Airport in Prague is one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. Today the Prague Airport has 4 terminals. The maximum number of passengers that the airport can receive is 15 500 000. The airport is the base for the airline CSA Czech Airlines. Regular flights to the airport of Prague have many large cities of Russia and the CIS: Moscow, Kiev, Minsk, St. Petersburg and others. In 2007 the Ruzine Airport was named the best airport in the CEE region.

This is a proper and sensible trend, and is commendable. We need far fewer flights scheduled. Rail speeds are improving and rail systems are expanding and modernizing. I would personally never fly into Prague when good trains are available. Rair travel is the most safe, comfortable, efficient, and least polluting form of transport known to man. Lets hope the trend continues.
