Vitosha is a large mountain range on the outskirts of Sofia, as well as one of the symbols of the Bulgarian capital, but also it is an extremely popular place for hiking, mountaineering and skiing in Bulgaria. Convenient bus communication with the capital, major highways and lifts has made Vitosha Mountain easily accessible to many tourists. On the territory of the hill is located a national park of the same name, which is the oldest nature reserve on the Balkan Peninsula. Due to the large difference in altitudes and a significant difference between the climates on territory of the park you can find a huge variety of flora and fauna. The studies of local scientists have shown that on quite a small area of the Vitosha National Park are located more than 1500 species of higher plants, 500 species of fungi, 500 species of algae, 326 varieties of mosses and more than 200 of lichens.
