The scientific staff of the Central Botanical Garden of Belarus managed to recreate the unique variety of lilacs, which were bred at the end of the XIX - the beginning of XX centuries and according to the registry of the international breeding fund were irrevocably lost.

Thanks to the scientists’ of the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus unique scientific work based on the latest biotechnology, they managed to save from extinction nearly 10 unique varieties of lilacs. Among the rescued copies are such well-known varieties of the Soviet breeding of 1930-1960s as "Komsomol members of 1920-s", "Marshal Zhukov", "Mikhail Kalinin" and Maxim Gorky". Also were returned some great varieties of XIX century of the French origin.

To date, the information on the restoration of the missing sorts was transferred to Russia, France and the United States for inclusion in the international breeding fund.

Central Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus is not only the biggest in Belarus, but also one of the largest in Europe. The natural complex occupies an area of 153 hectares, which has a collection of plants, containing more than 9,000 sorts from all over the world, which are serviced by 300 researchers. Each year, the Botanical Garden in Minsk is attended by 300 000 people.

To see the magnificent collection of lilacs you can by visiting the Botanical Garden of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus in the coming days. Lilac days will last from mid-May to mid-June.
