On February 17, 2011 in Kiev was opened the Grand sculpture salon, which is considered as one of the biggest cultural events in Ukraine. The salon is held for the fifth time.
The venue of salon this year is unconventional. The main exhibition is held in the "Art Arsenal" complex. In previous years the Salon took place in the Ukrainian House.
Top 30 Ukrainian sculptors will show their works in Kiev. However, the highlight of the salon will most likely be the work of the legendary Edgar Degas. One of the founders of impressionism is not only famous for his paintings, but also for his sculptures. So, Degas is the author of the masterpiece "A young dancer". The legendary statuette, as well as 73 more sculptures will be exhibited during the Grand sculpture salon from the opening day until March 13.
All exhibited sculptures by Degas are owned by the Ukrainian philanthropist Igor Voronov. For the show sculptures were insured for nearly $4 million hryvnias, according to gazeta.ua.
It is worth noting that the opening ceremony of the Grand sculpture salon included some incidents. During the visit of a number of Ukrainian politicians one of the photographers caught a showcase, where stood one of the Degas’ works – “Bending dancer” and overturned it. As a result, the showcase was broken and the statuette, which fell on the floor, was carried away by the employees of the gallery.
One way or another, despite the troubles at the very beginning, the organizers of the Grand sculpture salon-2011 in Kiev hope for success. This explains the expansion of the exhibition space. This year's exhibits are located in a total area of 8,000 square meters. Among the thematic sections can be marked Fashion Park, which subject is garden sculpture.
Grand sculpture salon-2011 was opened for a wide range of visitors on 18 February and will last until March 12. Opening hours: daily from 11:00 to 20:00. Ticket price is 40 hryvnias, discount price - 20 hryvnias.
