Nature

Zelków lies on the southern edge of the Olkusz Upland, between the Kluczwody and Bolechowicka valleys, at an average elevation of approximately 400 metres.

In the historic centre of the village is a karst pond that served for centuries as a local centre for water and social life.

In the immediate surroundings of Zelków are Tomaszowice Manor, Jaskinia Mamutowa (Wierzchowska Dolna), Jaskinia Wierzchowska Górna, Jaskinia Nietoperzowa and Jaskinia Ciemna (Ojcowska).

Arrival

The climbs to the centre of Zelków are steep and overcome almost 100 metres of elevation; the ascent from Bolechowice is particularly scenic.

History

Zelków was first mentioned in 1402. Historical remains include former sites of boundary markers at the exits of the Zelkowski Gorge and the Kluczwody Valley.

At the eastern entrance to the village from the Kluczwody Valley stands a roadside chapel, and a monument commemorates residents who were deported to Germany for forced labour between 1939 and 1945.

Local Character

A goat farm in Zelków produces seasonal cheeses exclusively from the milk of its own goats. The farm belongs to the European Network of Regional Culinary Heritage.
