In 2018 Russia will become a country that will host the FIFA World Cup. It was announced by the head of FIFA Joseph Blatter at the ceremony dedicated to the choice of host countries of the two upcoming world championships.
As reported by lenta.ru, Russia defeated other candidate countries by landslide. The main rival of Russia in today’s vote was England. Joint applications to host the 2018 World Cup submitted Spain and Portugal and the Netherlands and Belgium. The application of the latter came to support the former coach of the Russian national team Guus Hiddink.
Russia's application in the FIFA headquarters in Zurich was represented by First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov. Many expected that the Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will arrive to support Russia in the FIFA vote. However, just before the departure of the delegation it appeared that the trip to Switzerland was not included in the plans of the Russian premier.
Among those who also participated in the presentation of Russia's application was a prominent businessman Roman Abramovich, one of the best Russian players Andrei Arshavin, who now plays in the English “Arsenal”, as well as the Minister of Sports of Russia Vitaly Mutko.
The Russian promo, in which the boy, who plays for Russian national team, scored in the final of the World Cup goal against Italy, and suddenly wakes up, made a strong impression on many representatives. So, the BBC correspondent described the idea as "brilliant".
Many high officials of the Government of Russia have already given their comments on the right of the country to host the World Cup. In particular, the Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin said that the cost of holding the World Cup in 2018 will be significantly lower than the costs of holding the Winter Olympics in 2012. This quotation of the Minister is given by the news agency RIA Novosti.
