Russia is certainly not one of the most popular travel destinations, despite boasting countless attractions and beautiful landscapes. Until now, entry requirements have sometimes been very complicated, and language barriers have also posed a challenge. However, Russia is working to make the country more attractive to tourists. Visa requirements are gradually being relaxed, and tourism facilities are being brought up to Western standards—or even surpassing them. Naturally, this comes at a price.

Some parts of Russia, however, have long been very popular with tourists. These include the major cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad, with their magnificent architecture and cultural attractions. In St. Petersburg, visitors are captivated by the old palaces of the former tsarist capital, the historic city centre and the Peter and Paul Fortress. In Moscow, the Kremlin, Red Square, the Bolshoi Theatre and the city’s two great cathedrals are must-sees. City breaks in Russia are becoming increasingly popular.
A journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway is a truly special experience, offering views of the Siberian landscape, Lake Baikal and several cities along the route. In the Altai Mountains, visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including rafting, mountain hiking and climbing. Cruises on the Black Sea and river cruises are also very popular. The Black Sea coast is home to several lovely seaside resorts, the city of Sochi and, of course, the famous Crimean Peninsula.
