Croatian resort invites to the festival of asparagus

In Croatia, on the coast of Istria, in the popular resort town of Lovran, on April 9, 2011 will begin the traditional festival of asparagus. At the opening of the festival city residents dress up in "asparagus" costumes and organize a grand parade, which takes place on all main streets of the city. And chefs of local restaurants after the start of the holiday cook giant omelet (the most popular dish with asparagus), which include 1000 eggs and 30 kg of asparagus.

And of course, in all restaurants and cafes in Lovran main dishes are those made from asparagus, and their diversity will amaze even the worldly-wise gourmets. Visitors can sample soups and pancakes, casseroles and pizza with asparagus and for dessert try soufflés and crispy waffles. And at the fair, which will be organized on the central square of Lovran, you can even taste beer from asparagus. All asparagus, which will be used at the festival, is grown around the city on the slopes of the Mount Ucka. Due to the special climate, it has a unique taste and therefore enjoys the same success not only in Lovran, but also throughout the country. Unfortunately, asparagus suffers from transportation, and virtually cannot be stored, so connoisseurs of this delicacy gather annually at the Croatian resort. Asparagus festival will last for two weeks and end on the night of April 24 with a grand firework.

Croatian resort of Lovran is located in the Gulf of Kvarner, on the eastern slope of the Mount Ucka, just 6 kilometers from the famous resort of Opatija. The resort became popular in the late 19th century as a place for holidays of aristocracy and members of royal families in Europe. Today this town is considered to be one of the elite places on the Croatian coast and its beaches received "Blue Flag" award from the Federation for Environmental Education for strict compliance with water quality, security and services.
