Unique archaeological find was discovered in the heart of the capital of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Sukhumi. Antique well, dating back to IV-III century BC was found in the territory for construction of the Embassy of Russia in Abkhazia.
According to the Interfax news agency, the experts of the Office of Protection of Historical and Cultural Heritage argue that an archaeological find in Sukhumi is quite exceptional for the Abkhaz region.
Unique archaeological find in Sukhumi is a well of 5m in depth, laid out with large river boulders without binder mortar, and the bottom is covered with flat rocks. Also in the bottom of the well were found fragments of pottery.
Previously, similar findings in the form wells from rounded boulders or blocks were found at such modern Black Sea resorts as Gelendzhik, Anapa and several cities in the Crimea.
Archaeologists suggest that the age of the well is dated by IV-III century BC and belonged to the inhabitants of the ancient Greek colony Dioskuriade (VI century BC), which was located on the site of Sukhumi until the arrival of the Romans.
Currently, representatives of the Office of the historical and cultural heritage of the Republic of Abkhazia hold talks with Russian Ambassador to preserve the archaeological find, as well as prepared for conservation and preservation of the unique objects that have immense historical value for Sukhumi.
