Culture and History

Kuçovë’s modern history is closely linked to oil production. Albania’s first oil well was drilled in 1928 at a location now called Dikatër. In accounts of the Illyrian period, Kuçovë is also associated with the Desaret tribe.

In Perondi, the Shën Nikollë Church preserves Middle and Late Byzantine construction phases from the 11th century and from the 13th to 14th centuries. The Shën Kolli Church in Perondi is designated as a cultural monument and is considered a Byzantine architectural heritage site within the Kuçovë Municipality. It dates from the second half of the 11th century, preserves fragments of wall frescoes and is a destination for researchers, pilgrims and cultural heritage visitors.

The Church of the Annunciation in Kozara was registered as an Albanian cultural monument in 1963. It dates from the late 17th to early 18th century and represents the area’s Orthodox Christian heritage. Inside, it was known for wall frescoes painted by Joan and Naum Çetiri around 1806. Following a major fire on 14 August 2014, the church is partially damaged; parts of its walls are still standing.

Nature and Landscape

The Sinec Gorge is a protected natural monument designated in 2002. Its landscape consists of limestone karst formations, steep slopes and a depth of approximately 300 metres. The Sinec Gorge also includes the Sinec Spring and the Saraseli Stream; it is also noted for its rich biodiversity as well as its scientific and ecological value.

The Xhixhiles Cave is a prehistoric settlement that was inhabited from the Early Neolithic through the Bronze Age to the 3rd century BC. It is located in a limestone formation in a wooded area near the gorge of the Sirec Stream. Liqeni i Gorajit is designated as a place for fishing and walks in nature. The Belesova Reservoir is used by the surrounding communities locally for fishing and recreation.

Local Cuisine and Traditions

Rrosnica is a traditional dish prepared in the rural areas around Kuçovë. It combines chicken or other poultry from the village with small pieces of dough made from flour and egg.

The Festa e Ullirit in Perondi is described as an annual traditional festival celebrating olive culture. It includes markets with local products, folk music and dancing, as well as tastings of fresh olive oil. Hani i Qerosit is an agritourism complex in Kuçovë with comfortable rooms that offers traditional cuisine made from fresh regional produce. The agritourism complex combines its organic production with cooperation with local farmers.

Geographical Location

Kuçovë is located in the Myzeqe Plain, and the Devoll runs along the city. The town lies between Lushnja, Berat and Fier and is connected to major road corridors that support movement and exchange between the areas.
