Pulaj between Beach, Lagoon and Buna Delta

Pulaj features a coastal landscape with sandy shores along the Buna River, Velipoja Beach, also known as Pulaj Beach, and Viluni Lagoon. The beach lies between the Velipoja Forest and Viluni Lagoon. The nearby Velipoja Beach is approximately 14 kilometres long and has fine, dark sand. This brings together a riverbank, forest, lagoon and coast within a compact thematic area.

Nature and Birdlife

Viluni Lagoon is particularly notable for its birdlife. As a saltwater area, it lies about 2 kilometres east of Velipoja Beach and is connected to the sea by a natural channel. The Buna–Velipojë landscape is designated as a protected landscape under IUCN Category V and is considered an important wintering and breeding area for waterbirds. Around 138 bird species have been recorded in this area.

The “Pulaj Velipojë” protected area is also a preferred destination for birdwatching and is characterised by dense forests. In the wider region around Pulaj, a heron colony is located at the mouth of the Buna River. The various landscape areas range from forest and riverbanks to lagoon, coast and waterbird habitats. Both the bodies of water and the wooded areas and birdlife are therefore relevant when considering the natural features of the area.

Coast and Surroundings

The Buna Delta is 3 kilometres from Pulaj Guesthouse, and Viluni Lagoon is also 3 kilometres away. The Velipojë Nature Reserve is also located near Pulaj Guesthouse. The nearby Buna Delta and Viluni Lagoon offer opportunities for ecotourism and adventure tourism. The landscape areas mentioned differ in terms of bodies of water, coast, forest and protected area, and offer various factual perspectives on the surroundings.

Activities by the Water and in Nature

Walking paths run around Pulaj Guesthouse. Cycling is possible along the Buna River from Pulaj Guesthouse. In the coastal area of the village of Pulaj, trekking and hiking are considered possible tourist activities. Light water sports are offered at Velipoja Beach, also known as Pulaj Beach, during the summer.

Birdwatching and activities along the river and coast are presented side by side. Walking paths, cycling, trekking and hiking represent different types of activities; light water sports are explicitly associated with the summer. The information can therefore be distinguished by landscape area and type of activity, without equating nature observation with activities offered on the water or in natural surroundings.
