Culture and History

The Historical Museum of Mati is located in the center of Burrel and serves as an important research and tourism center. It presents the history, traditions, ethnography and important personalities of Mati. Its exhibits include archaeological objects, historical documents, traditional clothing, as well as artifacts from early communities and from more recent periods in the history of Mati.

The Burrel Prison is also part of Burrel’s history. Planning for its construction began in 1937. During the communist dictatorship, Burrel Prison was also known as the “Industry of Terror” or an extermination camp.

Historically, Rukaj Cave in the municipality of Mat was considered one of the most popular caves. It has geological and historical significance and preserves rare mineral formations as well as evidence of early human use.

Nature and Landscape

Parku Nëna Mbretëresha Geraldinë was established during the reign of King Zog and covers 2.4 hectares. It contains rare, perennial trees introduced from Europe, Asia, Africa, America and other regions. Following its renovation a few years ago, the park has served as a place of relaxation and recreation for citizens of different age groups. It attracts numerous domestic and foreign visitors in all seasons.

In the wider regional surroundings of Burrel, the “Ulëz–Shkopet” Nature Park encompasses the artificial lakes of Ulëz and Shkopet, river gorges and the surrounding forests. This wider regional area also includes small side lagoons and narrow gorges along Lake Ulza, which provide habitat for birds and aquatic species. The Mati Gorge is a natural monument there, shaped by the long-term erosion of the Mat River and characterized by vertical rock walls and clear river waters.

Activities

In the wider regional surroundings of Burrel, the “Ulëz–Shkopet” Nature Park offers opportunities for ecotourism, camping, walks in nature, and observing flora and fauna. Kayaking, sport fishing, camping and boating take place on Lake Ulza. Lake Shkopet is used for fishing, kayaking and exploring gorges.

In the wider regional surroundings of Burrel, the Mati Gorge is considered a destination for climbing, nature photography and exploring the mountains. The regional surroundings therefore bring together different types of landscapes: artificial lakes, forests, lagoons, river gorges and vertical rock walls.

Traditions and Cuisine

The annual fair of traditional Mat products takes place in Burrel and showcases handicrafts and food from the region. Traditional dances in the Mati region include the Matjane dances: the Mati Dance, the Sword Dance and men’s dances. Festivals also feature the traditional ritual “Throwing the Slippers”.

The traditional cuisine of the Mati region is based on local products and recipes passed down through generations. It includes flija, jufka, meat dishes and artisan dairy products.
