Culture and History
In Voskopojë, the churches form a complex of seven churches dating from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine periods. Their frescoes and icons bear witness to the skills of Albanian artists of the time. This cultural wealth is particularly evident at the Saint John the Baptist Monastery: the 17th-century monument reflects the cultural and economic prosperity of Voskopojë. At the same time, it is a three-nave church in the Byzantine style, preserving wall paintings by the monk Andon of Shipcka.
Other churches preserve distinctive artistic works. The Nicholas Church contains wall paintings by David Selenica and his assistants Kostandin and Kristo. In the Saint Athanasius Basilica, the wall paintings were created by Kostandin and Athanas Zografi; they were completed in 1745. The Saint Mary’s Church preserves wall paintings, icons and a carved wooden iconostasis. Its decoration was completed in 1712. The Saint Michael Church contains numerous surviving wall paintings displaying characteristics of 18th-century art.
The historic centre also points to the town’s past. It dates back to a centre founded in 1330 that was once cosmopolitan and culturally developed. In centuries past, Voskopojë was an important cultural and intellectual centre. Stone-built houses and cobbled streets reflect the region’s past and complement the impression conveyed by the churches and their furnishings.
Food and Crafts
Traditional handicrafts and heritage foods are also part of the local character. Voskopojë is known for local crafts, particularly woodwork and the weaving of woollen clothing. Associated with Voskopojë are saç-baked lakror, spit-roasted lamb, plum raki, petulla të fshira, petka, petanik and kulaç.
Nature
Voskopojë is located in a mountainous region at an altitude of around 1,200 metres above sea level. Opportunities for walks in nature and experiencing the mountain landscape are as much a part of the area as hiking and outdoor activities on the mountainous terrain of Voskopojë’s pine forest. This pine forest is considered a special natural attraction in the surrounding area.
The location can also be described regionally: Voskopojë lies around 20 kilometres west of Korça.
Winter and Events
Voskopojë has a ski slope that is available in winter and serves as a winter sports facility. The town has also hosted local and regional winter sports competitions. A seasonal highlight was the opening of the tourism season with a festival and fair on 24 June at the Saint Prodhrom Monastery.
When considering accommodation offers in Voskopoja, several points can be compared side by side before making a decision. Price components should also be clearly identifiable, so that the total amount does not have to be inferred solely from a base price. In addition, payment, modification and cancellation conditions may differ from one another. Those who include the churches, pine forest and regionally associated foods of Voskopoja in their travel plans can compare these aspects specifically without anticipating individual features of an offer.
