Vrith: Hotel, Nature and History

Natural attractions in Vrith and the surrounding area include Carraca e Vrithit, a tree of the Celtis australis species that is approximately 200 years old. It is 10 m high and has a trunk diameter of 1 m. The tree stands in the vicinity of Vrith at approximately 900 m above sea level. Carraca e Vrithit can be reached via the rural route Koplik–Dedaj–Vrith.

Nature

The moraines of Razëm, known in Albanian as Morenat e Razmës, are located in the villages of Vrith and Razëm in the municipality of Shkrel, at 1,050 m above sea level. They consist of Quaternary glacial deposits from the cirque of Gropa e Karikjeve. The deposits form hills 50–80 m high; the moraines are 1.7 km long and 1.2 km wide. Their formations include karst funnels and karst depressions. Beech and spruce forests cover the moraines. This area can also be reached via a rural route, namely Koplik–Dedaj–Razëm.

In the area between Razëm and Vrith, deposits show traces of intense tectonic and erosional activity. Historically, Razëm served as grazing land for the population of the surrounding Vrith area. Around Razëm, the Veleçik ridge, at 1,724 m, and Kunora, at 1,713 m, offer landforms of tourist interest, for activities such as mountaineering and picnics.

Hiking and Trails

Around Vrith, Razëm offers opportunities for hiking and winter activities. Shkreli Park has numerous hiking trails, caves and opportunities for agrotourism. The Dedaj–Vrith–Razëm route also runs through the area and is considered a horseback-riding route.

Culture and History

A cave in Vrith served as a hiding place for Dom Nikollë Gazulli for approximately 14 months during the communist persecution. Gazulli was a lexicographer and priest; he remained hidden in the cave for more than a year from the communist regime. In 1946, he was executed by communists. The cave was discovered by a local shepherd and contained several objects that Gazulli had used.

Faded graffiti can be seen on buildings in Vrith that are almost in ruins. They contain old phrases used by the formerly ruling political party during the period of communist rule. Thus, alongside the natural features, the townscape also contains tangible traces of the more recent political past.
