Stowbtsy District at a glance
The Great Principality of Sula Park is an interactive park devoted to medieval history, on the banks of the Sula River. Visitors can take a guided excursion around the grounds on a horse-drawn railway. The grounds are a pedestrian zone, and the park bakery offers the chance to sample fresh bread.
Several sites are dedicated to the poet Jakub Kolas and his family. These include the literary exhibition in Smolnya, the Akinchitsy memorial estate, and an exhibition in Albuc based on his poem “New Land.” Historic churches and the Dzerzhinovo estate also offer a range of cultural and natural points of interest.
What does Great Principality of Sula Park offer?
The park combines a single theme—medieval history—with a variety of on-site experiences: the horse-drawn railway takes visitors on a guided excursion around the grounds, while the bakery offers fresh bread to sample. As the grounds are a pedestrian zone, they are intended for visitors on foot. These details give you a concrete idea of whether the park suits your travel interests, without requiring a particular program or schedule.
Which places commemorate Jakub Kolas?
A branch of the State Literary and Memorial Museum of Jakub Kolas opened in Smolnya in 1967. The literary exhibition covers his childhood and youth, as well as his later life and work. The Smolnya estate preserves letters Kolas wrote to his fellow countrymen, as well as photographs, documents, and rare editions of his works. Both his biography and various records of his literary life are therefore at the center of the exhibition.
Akinchitsy is a memorial estate associated with the poet’s father, Mikhail Mitskevich. He lived there with his family from April 1, 1881, to April 1, 1883. The estate has been reconstructed with a forester’s homestead, a house, a barn, a well, and other farmyard features. On display are replicas of objects belonging to the Mitskevich family, as well as peasant household items from the late 19th century. The exhibition in Albuc focuses on something different: it is based on Kolas’s poem “New Land” and includes beekeeping and fishing equipment.
Where do nature and history meet?
The Lastok estate and its surroundings are a natural monument featuring deposits from the Paleo-Neman and Proto-Neman. The estate’s house and barn have survived to this day. In Dzerzhinovo, the museum estate lies in a forest within the Naliboksky Landscape Reserve, in the valley of the Usa River. The estate and its adjoining 80-hectare area have been a natural monument of republican significance since 1963. An exhibition in the restored two-story house tells the story of the Dzerzhinsky family across six halls.
The history of architecture can also be traced at various sites: the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Novy Sverzhen was built in 1588, and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the same town in 1590. The late-19th-century water mill in Novy Sverzhen has been rebuilt and restored. The Church of St. Joseph in Rubezhevichi was built between 1906 and 1910. There, the “Memory in Stone” installation features 46 erratic boulders arranged around a stone cross. A private museum of Jewish everyday life opened in Rubezhevichi on February 20, 2018.
