Nature

The area around Grubišno Polje is characterized by preserved meadows along the Ilova River and the oak- and beech-rich forests of Bilogora. This landscape is associated with rare or protected species such as white-tailed eagles, white and black storks, beavers, otters, fritillary butterflies, wild orchids and the Siberian iris. There are also opportunities for walking, fishing in the Ilova River and local sport fishing ponds, as well as hunting in the surrounding forests.

The Bara recreation area covers approximately three hectares and is surrounded by forest. It contains two sport fishing ponds with walking paths, as well as beach volleyball and small-sided football courts. Sports, cultural and entertainment events take place here throughout the year.

A county cycling route runs through Grubišno Polje and connects Bjelovar, Čazma, Garešnica, Daruvar and Grubišno Polje.

Culture and History

The Church of Saint George the Great Martyr in Grubišno Polje was built between 1773 and 1775 and is protected as a historical monument. The archaeological site of Arheološko nalazište Šuma Obrovi includes late-medieval fortifications, as well as a church with a cemetery. The Church of Saint Joseph in Grubišno Polje was built in 1782.

Marinje was introduced in 1900 as a parish celebration of the Name of Mary and developed in the early 20th century into an important Marian celebration and pilgrimage in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. Marinje is the parish's largest celebration and takes place on the Sunday after 12 September.

The Mato Lovrak City Library dates back to a reading room established in 1881, where residents read newspapers, magazines and books. Today, the library has a local heritage collection, as well as spaces for cultural and educational programmes, lectures and exhibitions. The Centar za kulturu i informiranje dr. Franjo Tuđman is the most important cultural institution in Grubišno Polje and hosts cultural and social events throughout the year.

The Bilogora Ethno House, Etno kuća Bilogora, is located in Grbavac within the municipality of Grubišno Polje. It presents rural life through old tools and authentic rooms, including a bedroom, a kitchen, a room by the attic entrance and a smithy. It also preserves traditions passed down through generations and organizes events including feather-plucking, Maypole raising and an Olympics of traditional sports. The cultural and tourist route Tragovima Ivana Nepomuka Jemeršića took place in Grubišno Polje.

Transport and Local Products

Road D5 (E661) runs through Grubišno Polje. To the north, it connects the town with Virovitica and the Hungarian border; to the south, with Pakrac, Lipik and Stara Gradiška. A frequent bus service operates on the Bjelovar–Grubišno Polje–Daruvar route, with several departures daily.
