Krapina: Hotels and Accommodation

The Krapina Neanderthal Museum uses multimedia content to present the world of the Neanderthals and their prehistoric origins. The Hušnjakovo Site is where the Krapina Neanderthal was discovered in 1899. It is protected as Croatia’s first paleontological natural monument; around 900 human fossil bones were found at the Hušnjakovo Site.

Culture

The Ljudevit Gaj Museum is located in Gaj’s birthplace at 14 Gajeva Street. It displays period furniture, portraits of Gaj and his family, reproductions of manuscripts, as well as printed works, books, brochures, newspapers and magazines connected with his work. The museum offers expert-guided tours in Croatian and English by prior arrangement; combined tours include both the museum’s permanent exhibition and the Hušnjakovo archaeological site.

Forma Prima is an open-air park in Josipovac with more than 30 large wooden sculptures and is registered as a cultural property of the Republic of Croatia. The Gallery of Krapina is housed in a 19th-century neoclassical building. Its collections of contemporary art, as well as the collections related to Ernest Tomašević and Vjekoslav Rukljač, are registered as Croatian cultural properties. The Franciscan monastery houses a rare collection of sacred art and a library founded in 1650.

History

Stari grad Krapina is described as one of Croatia’s oldest medieval fortified towns. Archaeological research uncovered there the ground plan of a presumed court chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity.

Nature

A forest path connects the Krapina Neanderthal Museum directly with the Hušnjakovo Site. The Hušnjakovo Circular Trail includes eight interpretation points with interactive panels, a geological column, a cave and a time-machine slide.

Events

Krapinafest is an annual festival of sacred music organised by the Franciscans. The Glumački Festival takes place every year over three weekends after Easter. Tjedan kajkavske kulture includes programmes from several cultural fields, not just Kajkavian songs. St Catherine’s Church hosts concerts by singers and musicians. Festivalska dvorana is located in the centre of Krapina near a large visitor car park.
