Donji Lapac: Hotels and Accommodation

In the centre of Donji Lapac stands the Stari hotel Ozeblin at a road junction. The single-storey corner building, featuring elements of the Art Nouveau style, dates from 1912. Because of its urban value, it is recognised as a defining element of Donji Lapac’s identity and is considered a rare Art Nouveau building in Lika.

Culture

The parish church of St John Paul II in Donji Lapac was consecrated in 2016. It is the only church dedicated to the Pope in the Diocese of Gospić-Senj and the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Rijeka.

Landscape and History

Lapačko polje is a 6.8 km² karst field with the hill of Obljaj at its centre. Obljaj was the site of a Roman fortress; remnants of its walls were still visible there in 1835. Beneath Obljaj, the sinking stream Kula disappears underground and resurfaces as the Jošića potok stream.

Donji Lapac developed as a typical small centre of the Military Frontier, with the appearance of a roadside settlement. The roads across Lapačko polje lead towards the Nebljuse border crossing.

Nature

Štrbački buk near Donji Štrbci in the Municipality of Donji Lapac consists of several waterfalls, the largest of which reaches 25 metres. Also located in the municipality, in Štrbci, is the 2,450-metre-long Una Educational Trail. It leads through the Una River gorge and includes rest platforms, benches, information boards and trail markers.

The Kamensko plateau within the Plješevica mountain range in the Municipality of Donji Lapac offers opportunities for hiking and excursions. There are forest roads and trails suitable for off-road cycling.

Local Life

During the period documented by the municipal development programme, Lapačke jeseni was held annually in Donji Lapac from 2010 onwards. The items displayed there include handicrafts, agricultural and dairy products, fruit brandies and cakes.
