On the hill where present-day Udbina is located, Gradina is situated on the northern edge as an archaeological site. The elevated, easily defensible position served as a control point for the Krbava Field. The surviving remains include the lower part of a round tower and wall fragments up to two metres high at the northern entrance. Gradina is described as a medieval settlement and fortress that was probably built in response to the threat posed by the Ottomans.

The archaeological site of St James Cathedral is located on the eastern edge of the settlement. St James Cathedral was probably built in the Gothic style in the last quarter of the 14th century. More than 600 graves have been examined in the cemetery that formed around the older church and St James Cathedral. Udbina was the seat of the Diocese of Krbava from 1185 to 1460.

Geographical Location

Pilgrimage

The Church of the Croatian Martyrs is the largest church in Udbina and a Croatian national shrine. The grounds of the shrine include the Park hrvatskih mučenika and a crypt.

Many visitors attend the recurring special masses. Around these recurring masses, the municipality of Udbina organises religious and cultural programmes. The central mass on the last Saturday in August is accompanied by religious and cultural programmes as well as a fair.

Cycling

Udbina has a circular mountain biking route through the Međugorje Plateau and the Sarajevo Valley. The route passes through forests, groves and meadows and includes macadam and single-track sections; the ascents and descents are challenging. A second route climbs to an elevation of 1,550 metres. In addition, an optional 30-minute walk leads to the summit of Ozeblin on Plješevica. From there, there are views towards Lika, the Una Gorge, Velebit, Dinara and western Bosnia.
