Culture
Belišće’s visitor attractions include Gutmann Palace, which is registered as a category A cultural monument and serves as an interpretation centre for Belišće’s industrial heritage; the Memorial Train, a prominent monument to the former narrow-gauge railway in Croatia and beyond; the Belišće Museum, whose collection opened on 30 April 1975 in one of the oldest residential buildings in the town; the Gater, a monument next to Gutmann Palace and the first sawmill carriage of the former Gutmann sawmill; the Green Houses, which were built between 1907 and 1910 in a distinctive Alpine style, form part of the preserved Gutmann Colony, belong to the town’s industrial architecture, have been preserved and are protected as cultural heritage; as well as Pekmez Street and events such as Fišijada and the čobanac cooking championship. The name Pekmez Street derives from the former practice of cooking elderberry jam in large cauldrons in the courtyards of the houses.
The Saint Joseph the Worker Parish Church contains a statue of the risen Christ by the academic sculptor Josip Poljan.
History
Seven preserved mansard houses stand on Vijenac S. H. Gutmann in Belišće; they were built between 1890 and 1895. The former administrative building of Belišće d.d., known as Upravna zgrada or “Palej”, was built in 1905.
