Maja is associated with a long religious history: the name Maja is first recorded in 1213, and the parish was documented in 1327. The present-day Church of Saint Elias was consecrated in 1830 in Svračica, in the valley on the left bank of the Maja River. The parish's main patronal feast is celebrated on 20 July in honour of the Prophet Elias. The Parish of Maja was re-established in 1698 and dedicated to the Prophet Elias after the former parish church of Our Lady had been destroyed. A wooden Church of Saint Elias was built in 1713 on the hill where the former church had stood.

Religious tradition

Following its restoration after the war, the Church of the Holy Prophet Elias in Maja combines old and new elements. On 30 June 2024, a solemn Mass and the blessing of the restored Church of the Holy Prophet Elias in Maja took place.

A parish gathering dedicated to Saint Elias in Maja featured goulash, cake, refreshments and tambura music.

Landscape

The Maja River flows through the settlement of Maja and nearby Svračica. Vis, Vratnik, Vješala and Glavica are each located in the surrounding area of Maja.

Geographical setting

The wider regional area around Maja includes Zminjak and Grad Pedalj. The Maja River is a right tributary of the Glina and is 32.6 kilometres long. It rises at the foot of Zrinska gora near Brezovo Polje and flows into the Glina at Prekopa, approximately 4 kilometres north of Glina.

Historical context

Banovina is part of the former Croatian Military Frontier.
