Culture

The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene is registered as protected immovable cultural property under the designation Z-3338. After liberation from Ottoman rule, Sunja developed into a market town in the late 17th century. Ceramic remains from a prehistoric fishing settlement on the nearby Pleće hill indicate prehistoric settlement in the area around Sunja.

Nature

The special ornithological reserve Đol Dražiblato in the municipality of Sunja comprises wet meadows as well as ash, willow and poplar forests and is important for the breeding of ducks. The banks of the Sunja River in Sunja form a landscape-value zone with views of the watercourse and the area's historical rural development.

The Sunjsko polje ecological network area is crossed by the Sunja River; administratively, its largest share belongs to the municipality of Sunja. The river landscape of the Sunja in the town includes mills, wooden footbridges, waterfalls and vegetation. Sport fishing is established in the Sava fishing zone, and ŠRU Bijelka GME is one of five sport-fishing associations operating in the municipality of Sunja.

Things to Do

The local PPLP 1 route is 23.7 km long, connects Lonjsko polje with Sunjsko polje and reaches Sunja via Sunjsko Selišće. The route includes a traditional ferry crossing of the Sava; the ferry is carried across by the river's current.

The state horse-breeding exhibition presents Croatian Posavac and Croatian Coldblood horses and includes a ceremonial procession of horse-drawn carriages and riders.

Transport

Railway service in Sunja was established in 1881. The Sisak–Jasenovac–Novska railway line runs through the area of Sunja. Sunja is also located on the Sisak–Hrvatska Dubica road.
