Lastovo: Hotels and accommodations

Lastovo is a medieval settlement in the shape of an amphitheater.

Geographical setting

Lastovo Islands Nature Park includes the island of Lastovo and comprises 44 islands, islets, and reefs. The low light pollution on Lastovo makes it suitable for observing the night sky and stars.

Culture and history

Stone stairways called skalinade lead around Lastovo’s old center near the church. The family houses from the 15th and 16th centuries have Sulari terraces and richly decorated Fumari chimneys. The Lastovski fumari are distinctive chimneys whose design varies from one chimney to another.

Below Dovac stands the parish church of Saints Cosmas and Damian at Lastovo’s historic main assembly square. It was expanded in the second half of the 15th century by local craftsmen as well as craftsmen from Dubrovnik and Korčula. The Church of Sv. Marija na Grži was built in 1442 and contains a wooden altarpiece from the 16th century by painters from Dubrovnik. Sv. Marija u Polju was built in the early 16th century on the foundations of a 14th-century chapel and contains an altarpiece by Piero Francesco Bissola.

Kašćel stands on Glavica above Lastovo at the site of a prehistoric hillfort. The newer fortress near Kašćel was built in 1808 and is used as a meteorological station. Lastovski Poklad was designated an intangible cultural heritage of Croatia in 2008.

Nature and trails

Lastovo has more than 200 km of hiking trails maintained by rangers from Lastovo Islands Nature Park. They include trails to Kaštel, Pod Veji vrh Cave, and Zaklopatica, as well as a circular route connecting several island chapels. Lastovo is surrounded by hills with viewpoints overlooking the settlement and the surrounding fields.

Local character

At the foot of Lastovo in the Gornja Luka area lies Vinarija Šarić. Family wine production is being revived there.

Getting there

Lastovo can be reached from Split and Vela Luka; ferries and catamarans operate daily from Split.
