Hiking

The Krapan–St. Bartul mining trail is 1.7 km long, classified as easy, and runs at an elevation between 87 m and 265 m. Visit Raša promotes the mining trail network leading to Krapan because of its natural landscape and views of the surrounding hills.

Culture

Krapan is a historic mining settlement. Regular coal mining began there in 1785; in 1905, the Church of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, was built. Continuous coal mining in Labinština began in the 1830s at three mines in Krapan.

In 1881, the Trifail Coal-Mining Company purchased the Krapan mines and the shaft in Vinež and combined the mines of Labinština into a single production and technological complex. In the early mining operations in Krapan, Rusi coal was extracted; it was described as tar used for coating boats and ships.

After the Second World War, the former mine workshop hall was converted into the Prvomajska machine-tool factory. After the mine closed, Krapan remained industrially active until the Prvomajska machine-tool factory closed in the early 1990s. The historic Krapan–Štalije railway line was initially built for horse-drawn operation; a steam locomotive was introduced soon afterward.

The tour Stone, coal and then it all began reaches Krapan, which is described as the center of mining in Labinština. As part of this tour, guests are first taken by bus to Kapelica before walking down to Krapan along a mining trail. An educational tour of Krapan’s industrial heritage led to the entrance of the first mine, identified former mining infrastructure, and explained sites connected with the early extraction of coal in Labinština.
