Sveti Petar u Šumi: Hotels and Accommodation

Sveti Petar u Šumi is located above Limska Draga and consists of scattered hamlets. The Pula–Divača railway line runs east of the town. The townscape also includes the Petrus Arena Sports Centre with ten courts for pljočkanje and the National Centre for Pljočkanje.

Culture and History

The Church of St Peter and Paul was completed and consecrated in 1755. Two of its chapels are lined with decorative Venetian leather wallpaper from the 18th century. Above the Renaissance arches, a Romanesque row of monastery arcades from the former monastic complex has been preserved. St Roch is the cemetery church and has Istria’s largest surviving shingle roof.

The Church of St Peter and Paul also has an organ by J. G. Eisla dating from around 1770. The Benedictine heritage of Sveti Petar u Šumi includes a preserved Latin manuscript and the Supetar Fragment, an early fragment featuring Cyrillic and Glagolitic letters. The Benedictine monks of the monastery used all three writing systems.
