Vrsar: Hotels and Accommodation

Culture

The historic centre of Vrsar follows the medieval layout of a walled town. Its narrow, winding and steep streets run along the natural slope and offer views of architectural details such as windows, balconies, stairways, gates and entrances. The Church of St Anthony of Padua was built in 1656 from local stone in the Venetian Renaissance style.

The Great Town Gate forms part of Vrsar’s medieval fortifications, was built in the Middle Ages and features Romanesque elements. The Small Town Gate preserves a well-maintained wooden structure that once blocked access to Vrsar. Vrsar Castle was restored in 2001 and is currently privately owned residential property. Giacomo Casanova first visited Vrsar in August 1743 and later returned to Vrsar.

History

The Montraker quarry is located on a peninsula northwest of Vrsar’s old town centre. It was quarried from prehistoric times until the mid-20th century. The abandoned cliffs of Montraker are used for events and shows.

Water

Longa is a small island in the southern Vrsar archipelago, half a nautical mile from Porto Sole Camp and the Belvedere Resort. Near Longa, visitors can snorkel around two rocks with an underwater arch that they can swim through. The Church of St George is located on the island of the same name, St George. On 23 April, the feast day of St George, a sailing pilgrimage to St George Island takes place.

Nature

From Vrsar’s viewpoints, visitors can see local islands, islets, bays and inlets. The longest cycling route in Vrsar leads to protected nature reserves along Lim Bay and through Kontija Forest. From Vrsar-Orsera, excursion boats travel through the Lim Channel to Rovinj-Rovigno on daily and nighttime panoramic tours.

Cuisine

Vrsar amaretti are a traditional hazelnut dessert associated with local agricultural and cultural traditions. In Vrsar, wine and rakija made from grape pomace are among the local alcoholic beverages. The Istrian varieties mentioned include Malvazija, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Borgonja, Merlot, Refošk, Cabernet and Ružičasta Hrvatica.
