Culture and History

The Croatian National Theatre Ivan Zajc presents Croatian and Italian drama, opera, ballet and concerts. Since 2004, the theatre has also organised the Rijeka Summer Nights event.

Trsatski Castle is a historic fortress on a hill above Rijeka and was first mentioned in 1288. Exhibitions and a permanent educational exhibition can be viewed there; open-air concerts and theatre performances are also held there.

Rijeka's Art Neighbourhood is located in a repurposed former industrial complex whose development began with a sugar refinery dating back to the 18th century. Beneath the old town lies the 330-metre-long former military tunnel, Rijeka Tunnel. Its entrance is next to the Cathedral of St Vitus; it is open to tourists as an underground experience focusing on the history of the Second World War.

Since the end of 2020, the Sugar Palace has housed the City Museum of Rijeka, with a permanent exhibition spread across two floors. The Cube building of the City Museum of Rijeka tells the story of the city's commercial, industrial, painting, architectural and photographic history.

The Natural History Museum Rijeka is located in Nikola Host Park and was founded in 1876 as the first regional museum in the Rijeka area. Its permanent exhibition covers the geological past of the Adriatic, oceanographic research, minerals, marine invertebrates, sharks and rays, as well as the local reptiles and amphibians.

The Astronomical Centre Rijeka comprises an observatory and a planetarium. It offers films and presentations about the universe; its terrace provides panoramic views over the Kvarner Bay.

Sea and Walks

Rijeka's Molo Longo is a 1,707-metre-long passenger terminal and promenade. A walk there offers views of all of Rijeka from the sea.

Preluk Beach is associated with surfing because of its location and the prevailing winds.

Market and City History

Rijeka's central city market has served as a place for dining and fish sales since the 19th century. The main building, completed in 1916, features elements of the Vienna Secession and stone decorations.
