Culture

Gomirje is home to the monastery and the Church of St. John the Baptist; the monastery is described as the westernmost Orthodox monastery in Europe. The first monastery was built in 1600, while the present-day church was built between 1719 and 1722. The monastery’s religious and cultural calendar includes the annual Feast of the Assumption, known locally as Velika Gospojna, which takes place on August 28. Cvjetni korzo Gomirje is a local tradition that welcomes spring and symbolizes the awakening of nature and the arrival of new life. It was revived after a 47-year interruption. During the procession, decorated participants, led by a horse-drawn carriage, make their way through the village.

The cycling route known as Vrbovsko–Gomirje–Kamačnik runs from Vrbovsko via Luke to Gomirje. It is 15.7 kilometers long and classified as moderately difficult.

Events

In 2025, the Gomirje Harmonika Mundijal reached its seventh international edition. The festival developed from a two-day event into a week-long format. The festival, completed in 2025, included performances by folklore groups from across Croatia; the festival program also includes a folklore showcase featuring 13 groups from across Croatia.

The festival’s opening evening is traditionally held at Gomirje Monastery. The program also includes a camp for young accordionists from various parts of Croatia. The Gomirje Harmonika Mundijal concluded in 2025 with an event at the NK Gomirje football pitch and was intended to continue in the following years.
