Murter: Hotels and Accommodation

Geographical location

Murter is located 15 km from Kornati National Park and serves as a starting point for sailing to the Kornati Islands. At the same time, Murter is the closest departure port to the Kornati Archipelago; the national park can only be reached from there by boat.

Culture and History

St. Roch's Church was built in 1651 as a votive church following plague epidemics. On St. Roch's Day, a statue of the saint is carried in procession to St. Michael's Church; in summer, classical music concerts are also held at St. Roch's.

Murter's maritime heritage includes traditional wooden boats, preserved sailing knowledge and the Latinsko idro regatta, which takes place annually at the end of September. The archaeological site of Colentum is considered a Roman city dating from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. Visible ancient remains of Colentum are located at the foot of Gradina Hill and in the nearby underwater area. Colentum was a harbor settlement with the remains of port facilities.

St. Michael's Parish Church was restored in the 18th century and is known for its Baroque altar.

Local History and Collection

The Zavičajna Zbirka Marka Mudronje Repca is housed in the Sokolana building at Murter's oldest square in Staro selo. The collection comprises more than 600 objects classified as protected cultural heritage and is divided into three exhibition areas.

Coast and Paths

Slanica Beach is a shallow sandy beach with a pebbly shore area. There are water slides and water amusement parks there. The promenade at the Old Harbor runs along the entire shoreline and provides a route for walking.

Activities and Local Traditions

Outdoor experiences in Murter include visits to the protected underwater archaeological site of Colentum, organized diving trips around the Kornati Archipelago, beach equipment rental, three cycling routes, and paths for walking or jogging with viewpoints.

The first written mention of olive groves on Murter dates back to the 14th century. The olive-growing tradition includes harvesting olives to produce oil and for local delicacies.

The Murterski karneval features individually designed and hand-sewn costumes. The event is also known as Murterske Bake and has a 130-year tradition.
