Culture and history

The Prozor Fortress in Vrlika was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It is considered one of the most significant preserved medieval fortifications in the Dalmatian hinterland. Its location offers views over the Vrličko polje, Peruća Lake, Vrlika and the surrounding area. Next to the fortress is a sport climbing area with 15 routes of varying difficulty.

The Crkva Gospe od Ružarija in Vrlika was built in 1876 on the site of an earlier church and consecrated in 1898. It has a Baroque main altar. The Church of St. Salvation is described as one of the most significant Croatian pre-Romanesque buildings; according to a surviving inscription, it was supposedly built in the 9th century.

Čuvari Kristova groba is a Vrlika tradition during Holy Week in which members of the brotherhood guard Christ’s tomb during the Good Friday rituals. The silent kolo of Vrlika is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage. Crkvina in Koljane belongs to the Koljane archaeological zone, which is registered as Croatian cultural heritage.

Surroundings

The area surrounding Vrlika includes Gradina, Validžića Pećina, Crvene Grede, Mali Lupoglav and Ribareva Pećina. In the wider regional surroundings of Vrlika are Sveti Vid, Sveti Ilija and Zagrabež, Gor. Kazanci.

Nature and water

Vrlička Česma is a spring in the southwest of Vrlika whose grounds were developed in the 19th century. It continues to serve as an open-air stage for opera performances. Perućko Lake near Vrlika offers swimming, rowing and fishing. The Garjak Rowing Center at Peruća Lake is used year-round by professional and recreational rowers for training.

Events

Blagdan Gospe od Ružarija is regularly celebrated in Vrlika on the first Sunday in October. During the program in early October, there is a fair featuring agricultural products and handicrafts.
