Pitomača: Hotels and Accommodation
Nature
Since 2008, the Mura–Drava Regional Park in the area of the Municipality of Pitomača has included the protected landscapes of Križnica, Jelkuš and Širinski otok, as well as the Vir wetland.
Jelkuš is a protected landscape bounded by the Croatian-Hungarian border and the Drava; an isolated sand ridge there provides a habitat for birds. Širinski otok is a natural area bounded by a branch and the main channel of the Drava. It is isolated and provides a habitat for numerous bird species; when water levels are low, the riverbed of the old Drava channel becomes a natural crossing for animals.
Križnica is a river island and a particularly well-defined meander of the Drava, whose flower shape with five petals is easily recognisable and is considered a symbol of this section of the river. Within Croatia’s and the European Union’s NATURA 2000 network, Bilogora is an internationally important bird protection area (SPA, Special Protection Area), where populations of bird species listed in the Red Book of Endangered Birds of Croatia breed.
Culture
The birthplace of the poet Petar Preradović in Grabrovnica is a historic house built in the 18th century and a cultural monument; it is open to visitors, although individual or group visits must be announced and reserved in advance.
The Petar Preradović House features the multimedia exhibition “Virtualna Stvarnost”, with an immersive 3D reconstruction of the poet’s birthplace. The house offers interactive content such as completing a poem, putting verses together collaboratively and quiz questions; in the “Susreti” basement area, visitors encounter Petar Preradović in holographic form.
The Parish Church of Saint Vitus in Pitomača is the largest church and a protected cultural heritage site. Since the mid-20th century, Pitomača has been regarded as the cradle of tamburica instrument making in the Kos workshop.
Things to Do
The Križnica Visitor Centre combines a modern multimedia centre with organised nature programmes, a ferry, a suspension bridge and local cuisine.
The Klopotec Trail is a trail-running route through a landscape shaped by centuries of tradition, featuring ascents, descents and viewpoints.
Cuisine
In the immediate vicinity of the votive chapel of Saint Martin stands an impressive klopotec structure; next to it are a visitor hut and an authentic wine cellar.
Pečenjak, or roasted corn, is a speciality prepared and offered to visitors in various ways at a unique summer event in Pitomača in late July or early August.
