Geographical Location

Before 1880, Podgorje developed as Kozja Glava in the southwestern part of the Virovitica wine-growing region.

The “Virovitički vidici” circular hiking trail is 10 kilometres long, takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete, and has an elevation gain of 93 metres. The hiking trail runs through the Podgorje area.

The “Virovitički vidici” wine road leads to Podgorje; there, paths branch off from the main road to the vineyards on the slope. The vineyard paths near Podgorje along the “Virovitički vidici” wine road offer sweeping views of Virovitica, the Drava and Hungary.

History and Culture

The Chapel of Saint Nicholas Tavelić was opened in Podgorje on 24 September 1965. A branch chapel was planned for Podgorje, where Holy Mass would be celebrated on Sundays and religious education would be provided regularly.

In the wider regional surroundings of Podgorje, the “Spiritual Experience Route” in Virovitica-Podravina County offers a multi-day cultural route through town centres and picturesque villages, featuring around a dozen churches as well as themes related to architecture, ethnography, history, nature, recreation and pilgrimage.

Local Events

Advent in Podgorje was held for the third time in 2025 and attracted visitors from Podgorje, Golo Brdo, Sveti Đurađ, Virovitica and other places in the Virovitica area. At Advent in Podgorje 2025, langošice, fritule, homemade sausages in rolls, hot chocolate, mulled wine and tea were offered.

The Kestenijada “Sve nam se opet s jeseni vrati” was held in Podgorje for the second time on 25 October 2025.
