Obrovac: Hotels and Accommodation

Obrovac lies at an extension of a limestone canyon; on the way to Zadar, the Zrmanja River is crossed there. When planning a stay in Obrovac, you may also be looking to book a hotel.

Nature

The Zrmanja flows through a karst landscape and several canyons, forming travertine and waterfalls along the way. There are various rafting routes on the river, suitable for beginners and experienced rafters. Guided quad tours run along forest tracks and through mountainous landscapes, with guides accompanying participants.

History and Culture

The present-day settlement of Obrovac developed as the suburbium of a medieval fortress on a hill; from the 14th century onwards, Obrovac was owned by the Krbava lords, the Kurjaković family. The remains of the Kurjaković fortress are still in fairly good condition today. Obrovac remained a small trading port because the Zrmanja was navigable up to the town.

The parish church of St Joseph in Obrovac was originally built as a medieval structure in the 15th century and was completely renovated in the Baroque style in 1794. The Church of the Holy Trinity was rebuilt in 1834 after its predecessor was demolished, acquired its final appearance at the end of the 19th century and was consecrated in 1906. It preserves older icons from the original iconostasis, created by the Greek painter Evtimije Dimitrijades in 1835/1836. The remains of the Benedictine monastery of St George Koprivski can still be seen in the Obrovac cemetery today.

The Obrovac Heritage Museum features ethnographic and natural history collections in its permanent exhibition.

In the Town

Obrovac is home to one of three electric bicycle charging stations; the other two are located in Gračac and Golubić. Visitors can swim in the Zrmanja, stroll through Obrovac's narrow streets, enjoy coffee on the Riva, view the town from a lookout point, walk along old Italian gravel roads, and visit cultural landmarks or the heritage museum.
