Pirovac: Hotels and Accommodations

The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands in the historic center of Pirovac and was built in the 18th century on the foundations of an older church dating from 1506. History and Culture

The historic settlement known as “Old Settlement” is a medieval settlement and fortress first documented in 1298 as the property of the noble Šubić family. Until the mid-19th century, Pirovac was a walled islet. Land reclamation at the beginning of the 20th century connected the historic settlement with the mainland.

Vrata sela preserves remains of the 16th-century wall; the gate was built in 1505 by Count Petar Draganić to defend against the Ottomans. A Templar cross is carved into the base. Draganić-Vrančić Castle was expanded and decorated in the Neo-Renaissance style, with Moorish influence evident in the design of the chimneys. The castle housed a valuable family library; valuable documents and objects significant to Croatian history have also been preserved there.

A Glagolitic inscription dated 1495 is carved into the side door of St. George’s Chapel. The cemetery chapel of the Draganić-Vrančić family contains a Gothic sarcophagus with a relief of the Virgin Mary by Bonino da Milano, dated 1429. Pirovačko Cultural Summer is a recurring summer program featuring evenings dedicated to fishing, concerts, exhibitions, and folklore performances.

Coast and Nature

Pirovac has numerous natural beaches and sandy coves. The island of Sustipanac lies directly in front of the town and is used for swimming and sunbathing. Boating from Pirovac provides access to local coves and the island of Sustipanac. Marina Pirovac is located in the town center and can accommodate up to 200 boats; the Kornati and Krka national parks are considered nearby destinations for sailing trips.

Pirovački Bay is considered a habitat for pods of dolphins. In the surrounding area, freshwater fishing is possible at Lake Vrana via the Prosika Canal.

The Makirina Promenade and the nearby viewpoint offer panoramic views over Pirovački Bay and the Kornati Archipelago.

Getting There

Pirovac has bus connections via Zagreb, Šibenik, Zadar, and Split to major European cities.
