Osek – Chapel, Jewish Cemetery and Castle Park

In the southern part of Osek, the listed Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands on the main road. It was built in the second half of the 18th century with Baroque elements, on a rectangular ground plan with a three-sided termination.

The building thus combines a clearly defined ground plan with Baroque design and a location within the village. The chapel is therefore a distinct cultural point, separate from the historical sites and landscape destinations mentioned later.

Culture

Around 50 gravestones from the first half of the 19th century have been preserved on the 250-square-metre grounds of Osek Jewish Cemetery. The Jewish cemetery is freely accessible. On the southern edge of Osek lies the extensive Zámek Osek complex with a landscape park.

At the cemetery, the approximate number of preserved gravestones, the size of the grounds and the period they date from are the main points of focus. The castle complex, by contrast, is defined by its location on the southern edge of the village and its associated landscape park.

A fortress built by the Osecký of Brloh stood on the site of today’s pseudo-Baroque, four-winged Zámek Osek, built in 1911, in the 15th century. JUDr. Eduard Daubek commissioned the conversion.

Several historical layers therefore meet at the same castle site: the 15th-century fortress, the later commission for its conversion and the present four-winged castle from 1911. Both the architectural form and the named commissioner are thus apparent.

Things to do

For 2024, 2025 and 2026, the spring hike “Okolo Oseka” is listed in the municipality’s events calendar. The “Pochod okolo Oseka” in 2026 starts at the village inn and leads mainly into the forests behind Malá Turná. The 35-kilometre “Za památkami Radomyšle” excursion route also passes through Osek.

The two hikes differ in their temporal reference: “Okolo Oseka” is listed for three consecutive years, while the “Pochod okolo Oseka” is explicitly assigned to 2026. The excursion route’s 35 kilometres represent a separate distance value for planning a day trip.

Dates and route length provide different points of comparison for planning a day trip when a specific event year or a longer excursion route is to be taken into account.

Landscape

The Radomysl Mediumwave Radio Mast Ruin and Chlum Mountain are located in the immediate surroundings of Osek. The Vejskavec hill [Osek-Malá Turná], Dubovec hill [Přešťovice - Brusy] and Jasanový hill [Radomyšl-Leskovice] are also in the immediate surroundings.

The destinations in the immediate surroundings thus include different designations: a ruin, a mountain and several hills. Their names also contain references to Osek-Malá Turná, Přešťovice - Brusy and Radomyšl-Leskovice.

In the wider regional area around Osek are Hrad Zvíkov Castle, the historical site “Lety u Písku. Památník holokaustu Romů a Sintů v Čechách” and Svatý Jan Church.

The destinations in the wider regional area expand this selection to include a castle, a historical site and a church. The geographical areas therefore remain named separately: the mountains, hills and ruin mentioned earlier are in the immediate surroundings, while the three additional destinations are in the regional area.

About 1 kilometre south of Osek, the roadside shrine of St. Thecla stands along the main road towards Kbelnice. The masonry-built roadside shrine of St. Thecla is considered a valuable landscape feature and evidence of popular religious devotion.

The roadside shrine combines the approximate distance, the direction towards Kbelnice and its location on the main road with its classification as a landscape feature and evidence of popular religious devotion.
