Nature

Bélmegyeri Fáspuszta is a 644-hectare part of the national park; 82 hectares of it are under strict protection. The landscape is one of Hungary’s last remaining intact salt meadows. On the saline pasture of Bélmegyeri Fáspuszta stand individual pedunculate oaks several centuries old and old wild pear trees. Bélmegyeri Fáspuszta is home to one of the world’s strongest known populations of the endangered butterfly species Gortyna borelii (“great burnet moth”).

The central, strictly protected part of Bélmegyeri Fáspuszta is inaccessible because of its small size and vulnerability. The locally protected white willow “Öreg hölgy”, also known as “Idős Fehér Hölgy”, stands on the road from Vésztő to Bélmegyer. It is considered the oldest white willow in Békés County.

Bélmegyer can be reached by road from Békés, Mezőberény or Vésztő.

Culture

The Wenckheim hunting lodge in Fáspuszta was built by Béla Wenckheim between 1855 and 1862 according to plans by Miklós Ybl. The Wenckheim Castle is closed to tourism and can only be viewed from outside, beyond the fence. Remains of the former English landscape garden and trees over 100 years old have been preserved around Wenckheim Castle.

The Kárászi hunting lodge is a Romantic-Eclectic hunting lodge built on the outskirts of Bélmegyer in the 1860s. It has a five-hectare park, one hectare of which is protected. A monument in Fáspuszta commemorates the soldiers from the surrounding farmsteads who fell in the First World War.

Cycling

The 100-km road cycling route of the Körös-100 endurance tour passes through Bélmegyer.

Local

The Disznótoros programme at Bélmegyeri Vadászkastély allows guests to make sausages and bake bread themselves. From mid-November to the end of February, pheasant hunts as well as hunting opportunities for roe deer, fallow deer, mouflon and partridge are offered at Bélmegyeri Vadászkastély.
