Kétegyháza: Folk House, Church and Cycling Path

The Romanian folk house is furnished with a traditional folk-farming collection. It brings together objects made by local self-sufficient farmers and craftspeople with household items from more distant regions. Local crafts and everyday objects from other regions are thus displayed side by side—two perspectives on a collection that reaches beyond a single place of origin.

The church offers a different way to experience local culture. “Single-nave” describes its design, with one main nave; it is also a detached building. The cross atop the tower stands 28 metres high. According to local tradition, stones were brought from Milova for the church’s construction. This story is presented as a tradition and adds a connection to the building’s history alongside its architectural features.

The Andrássy-Almásy Castle Park offers yet another perspective: it surrounds the castle as an arboretum. The collection, church and castle park each have a distinct character—from displayed household items and architecture to a landscaped park.

In the wider Békés destination, Körösvölgyi Animal Park in Anna-liget, Szarvas, combines nature observation with a walking trail. The park is set in a 26-hectare grove. Along the roughly two-kilometre trail are bird aviaries, animal houses, wetlands and spacious enclosures. Its length and the stops along the way give you a concrete idea of the walk, without confusing it with a water route.

The Jégmadár Water Nature Trail is a water route. It starts at the jetty at Körösvölgyi Animal Park and follows a one-kilometre stretch of the Szarvas–Békésszentandrás oxbow lake. Eight floating buoy stations introduce visitors to the oxbow lake and its wildlife and plant life, particularly canoeists and rowboaters without an expert guide. The trail is accessible only by canoe or boat. The two activities therefore clearly differ in how you get around: the walking trail and water route are not interchangeable.

There are other ways to observe wildlife in the wider Békés destination. At the Sterbetz István Bustard Conservation Visitor Centre in Réhely near Dévaványa, visitors can see great bustards up close only here in Hungary. Guided tours, birdwatching, nature photography, themed programmes and astronomical presentations can be requested. The Réhely Trail starts and ends at the visitor centre; the Mágor-pusztai Trail is just over 500 metres long and introduces visitors to the natural and cultural-historical values of the protected area.

Cultural destinations also demonstrate Békés’s diversity. The collection at the Munkácsy Mihály Museum in Békéscsaba includes natural history, archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art-historical objects. The castle of Gyula was built in the 15th century and is now the only intact lowland brick castle in Central and Eastern Europe. CsabaPark preserves, maintains and presents the traditions of making Csabai sausage; it is also the venue for the Csabai Sausage Festival.

This lets you choose a destination based on your interests without treating different places and activities as if they were the same.
