Szihalom's Árpádvár site is classified in Hungarian archaeology primarily as a prehistoric site and secondarily as a site from the period of the Hungarian Conquest. This makes the Árpádvár site suitable for travel plans in which archaeological traces play a role.

The Árpádvár estate was a royal or ducal court site in the 11th century; in 1261, Szihalom was listed among the possessions of the Diocese of Eger.

The historic fortification is located on a long, projecting peninsula on the southwestern side of Szihalom. The peninsula is enclosed in a semicircle by the regulated Rima watercourse, and the surrounding terrain reflects its former marshland character.
