Culture and History

The North Kazakhstan Regional Museum of Local History is located in Petropavl’s historic center, in architectural monuments from the 19th century that were formerly merchants’ houses. The exhibitions are arranged across two floors in 13 thematic halls. Their subjects range from ancient and medieval history to ethnography, the region’s nature, and military history, as well as traditional Kazakh everyday life and clothing and independent Kazakhstan. The museum offers themed excursions and conducts educational projects on local history, Kazakh customs and traditions, and regional heritage.

The North Kazakhstan Regional Museum of Fine Arts was established in 1989 in an early-20th-century wooden building recognized as a national architectural monument. Its collections include painting, sculpture, graphic art, decorative and applied art, theatrical and decorative art, icon painting, and religious objects. The museum also displays works by Kazakh artists, including painting, sculpture, decorative and applied art, and children’s art.

The historic cityscape also includes the Ablai Khan Residence complex, with Ablai Khan’s house, an office, a guesthouse, and a bathhouse, as well as the Kyzylzhar Central Regional Mosque. It opened on November 27, 2005, and has two 42-meter-high minarets and a 32-meter-high dome. Services have been held in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul since 1947. On Petropavl’s main street stands a sculpture of Abai and Pushkin: Two figures of poets symbolize the friendship between the two peoples.

Nature

Petropavl Botanical Garden is located in the northern part of the city on the banks of the Ishim River and covers 20 hectares. It is a specially protected natural area where educational and introductory excursions are conducted and plants are displayed for visitors. A single admission ticket to the Botanical Garden provides access to the grounds, the greenhouse, and the winter garden.
