Culture

The Mashkhur Zhusup Mosque is an octagonal building with four 63-meter-high minarets and a 54-meter-high dome. Inside, there is a museum of Islam and the history of the mosque, a library, and a video room. Religious lectures in Kazakh and Russian, as well as educational programs for spiritual development, are also held there.

Pavlodar’s religious architecture also includes the Roman Catholic Church, a red-brick building constructed in 1999.

Museums

The D.P. Bagaev House Museum displays exhibits in three rooms and a restored photographic pavilion attached to the house. It is Pavlodar’s only memorial museum and Kazakhstan’s only museum dedicated to a photographer and local historian. The house museum works with contemporary photographers and develops presentations for their exhibitions. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 09:00 to 18:00.

The Maira Shamsutdinova House Museum of Song Creativity opened in 2001 in a protected historic building constructed in 1900. The Military Glory Museum displays authentic weapons, photographs, orders, medals, personal documents, and letters related to the Second World War. Presentations and academic conferences are also held there, and patriotic clubs are available.

The House of Shafer is Kazakhstan’s only museum of gramophone records. Its collection includes 25,000 gramophone records, 1,500 reel-to-reel recordings, and 1,500 audio cassettes. The house hosts sound-recording events as well as literary and musical evenings with writers, musicians, and artists from Pavlodar.

The Potanin Regional History and Local Lore Museum accepts requests for visits and guided tours.

History

Pavlodar’s River Station stands on Academician Chokin Street beside the Irtysh. It was built in 1969 on the site of an older passenger pier. A memorial plaque at the River Station records the stop made by Elena, Nikolai, and Yuri Roerich on June 6, 1926, during the Trans-Himalayan Expedition.

Nature

The Pavlodar region includes the Bayanaul recreation area, a network of salt lakes, and the Schaldai pine forest. A registered network of 89 tourist routes and hiking trails is also recorded.
