Bishkek: Hotels and Accommodation

Cityscape

Bishkek city centre is very easy to explore on foot; most attractions are located within 2 km of Ala-Too Square. The square features dancing and fire fountains, whose jets of water reach heights of up to 21 metres. Illuminated ramps on the square are intended to improve access for people with reduced mobility.

Erkindik Boulevard is approximately 2.3 km long, including its pedestrian section, and runs from the area beside Bishkek II railway station and the station park to Jibek-Jolu Avenue. Its urban origins date back to the planting of Oak Park in 1898 and the creation of a square in 1902. Today, the boulevard supports cycling, inline skating, riding scooters, running, badminton and tennis. In the oak-lined northern avenues, the trees provide shade and create cooler conditions for walking.

Culture

Osh Bazaar was established in 1983 in western Bishkek on the site of the former Ala-Archinsky collective farm market. The market is an Eastern-style trading complex with a national character; its shops are arranged around a square.

Bishkek's historical identity is linked to the former Bishkek Fortress. It stood on caravan and nomadic routes towards Issyk-Kul and Semirechye before its remains were destroyed in 1862. Fuchik Park was created in western Bishkek in 1935–1936 by workers from the Interhelpo cooperative.

The National Historical Museum presents Kyrgyz identity from its nomadic origins through to independence. The State Historical Museum is housed in monumental Soviet architecture and includes dioramas and ethnographic rooms.

Cuisine

Cold noodle soup Ashlan-fu from street vendors near Osh Bazaar is described as Bishkek's signature street food. Osh Bazaar is best visited in the morning, when it is less crowded and cooler and its produce is at its freshest. Spices, kurut, dried fruit and kalpaks are available.
