Remte: Castle Park, Lake and History
Remte combines traces of its historic manor estate with an expansive castle park and special places by the water. When looking for a suitable hotel, the town therefore offers primarily cultural and scenic points of orientation.
Key facts about Remte
The New Remte Castle was built in 1800 in the Neoclassical style of Berlin at the request of the then manor owner, Count Karl Medem. The castle park of Remte Manor is a 26-hectare landscape park created at the beginning of the 19th century. The preserved old manor house of Remte Manor dates from the 18th century. The Medību tornis in Remte Castle Park was restored in 2015.
Which historical sites shape Remte?
Remte Lutheran Church has held an important place in community life for several centuries. Next to it is a chapel of the von Medem family, built in the second half of the 18th century or at the beginning of the 19th century. This dating shows that the history of the town is not limited to a single building.
The castle park includes diverse plantings as well as a system of ponds and canals. The Mīlestības ozols stands at the edge of Remte Castle Park. The tree has a circumference of 5.3 m and is popular with newly married couples. This gives a tour of Remte different focal points: historical buildings, designed landscapes and individual distinctive sites can be considered separately.
What is known about the New Castle and the manor house?
The old manor house of Remte Manor stands opposite the New Castle. The two names should be understood in historical terms: although the New Remte Castle was built in 1800, it burned down in the summer of 1906 in a fire caused by revolutionaries. The old manor house, by contrast, is documented as a preserved building from the 18th century. Those interested in the development of the manor complex can thus distinguish between preserved structural elements and lost building fabric.
Which experiences complement the cultural focus?
The Remte Castle Park Sensory Trail focuses on experiencing different senses. By walking over different surfaces and structures, visitors can experience perceptions directly through the path. This is a different way of exploring the park than viewing the historic grounds solely through buildings and dates.
Another distinct experience is offered by the “Silavas” mini-zoo. There, visitors can interact with donkeys, llamas, a horse, a pony, African ostriches, nutria, chinchillas, rabbits, various birds, sheep and goats. If you would like to compare Remte with another destination, you can also include Brocēni in your plans.
Which traces of church history are important?
The church building visible in Remte today was erected using their own funds by the then owners of Remte Manor, Johann Friedrich von Medem (1722–1785) and his third wife, Agnes Elisabeth von Medem, née Brukena-Foka (1717–1784). The history of the buildings also includes their use during the Soviet occupation: Remte Church was used as a storage facility, while a storage facility for lubricants was set up in the chapel.
