Rāmuļi: School History, Windmills and Water Experiences

Rāmuļi combines the history of Rāmuļi School with traces of windmills, manor history and individual opportunities by the water.

The history of Rāmuļu pamatskola is traced back to 1864. The school and community building was jointly constructed on the land of Vanadziņi in 1872 and inaugurated on 6 December 1873. Antons Veidens headed the school from 1873 to 1893 and also founded a choir in Rāmuļi.

The historic school building was made of wood. It comprised two classrooms, a dining hall, two dormitories, a kitchen and three rooms for teachers. In the 1930s, a second floor was added to the building. A new school building was constructed in 1958; the older building was subsequently converted into a boarding school. In 2015, Rāmuļu School celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Key facts about Rāmuļi

The history of the people and music is also part of this context. Antons Veidens was not only the headmaster for more than two decades, but also led a choir. Dziesmu diena Rāmuļos takes place every five years. Thus, educational, choral and event history stand side by side, without this allowing any conclusions to be drawn about a current event calendar.

What other historical traces are there?

The Rāmuļi windmills are among the notable technical traces. They ceased operations in 1927. A special feature was the mechanism used to turn the mill head: all the gears were made of wood rather than iron. This specific construction difference gives the history of the windmills a distinct focus.

An older perspective is provided by the 1681 plan of Rāmuļi Manor. The burial of Jānis Sārms is also documented in Rāmuļi Cemetery. For additional comparisons with other locations, you can also open the entries for Cēsis and Raiskums.
