Ragaciems: Coast, Fishing Tradition and Trails

Ragaciems combines a coastal location on the Gulf of Riga with traces of fishing traditions, a lighthouse, marked trails and a local fish market. When looking for accommodation, the town is therefore particularly interesting if you want to organise your stay around specific coastal, cultural or hiking points.

  • Cape Ragaciems lies on the western shore of the Gulf of Riga and ends several hundred metres offshore in a shallow, stony underwater sandbank.
  • Ragaciema bāka Lighthouse was built in 1960 as a red rectangle on a lattice tower.
  • At the Zivju tirdziņš Ragaciemā fish market, fish caught in the Gulf of Riga and the Baltic Sea are sold.

Quick facts about Ragaciems

At Ragaciema Sedums, several traditional net huts have been restored by descendants of local fishermen. They preserve the history of fishing traditions and commemorate their ancestors. Ragaciema Sedums received the “Latviskais mantojums” designation in 2015.

What trails and activities are available?

Stage 21 of the Jūrtaka coastal hiking route begins at the beach by Ragaciema bāka Lighthouse and ends at Dubulti Beach. Only the first third from Ragaciems to Dubulti runs through Ķemeri National Park.

Another route designation is Gausā jūdze. It separates Ragaciems from Klapkalnciems, is approximately 7 km long and was covered on foot or horseback in earlier times. The route therefore represents both a historic connection between two places and a specific length given only approximately. SUP boards can also be rented at Ragaciems Beach. Thus, in addition to hiking, the range of activities includes an activity on the water.

Which local products can you find in Ragaciems?

The Zivju tirdziņš fish market is not limited to fish. Bread, honey, fruit and vegetables from farms in the nearby and wider surrounding area are also usually available there. For travellers who want to discover regional cuisine through specific products, this selection complements the connection to fishing with products from the surrounding area.
