Ainaži: Discover the Coast and Maritime History

In Ainaži, coastal landscapes, maritime history, and small museums come together. Those who choose the town as a destination can focus on different aspects, ranging from a distinctive breakwater and a nature reserve to collections on maritime and firefighting history.

The “Ainaži North Pier” breakwater consists of a section more than half a kilometre long, made of large boulders. The Randu pļavas nature reserve also stretches along part of the Vidzeme coast, from Ainaži to Kuiviži. The Museum of Ainaži Naval School and the Ainaži Firefighting Museum are among the places dedicated to cultural and local history.

Ainaži is particularly suitable for travellers who want to get to know a coastal town not only through its landscape, but also through specific historical evidence.

The Ainaži North Pier is 361 metres long along the coast and extends a further 482 metres into the bay.

Its construction was mainly connected with the building of an old narrow-gauge railway branch from Ainaži railway station to the breakwater. This branch was intended to make it easier to unload ship cargo.

Its shape is immediately apparent from the large boulders.

The Museum of Ainaži Naval School is dedicated to the town’s maritime history. Its collections include maps of Ainaži, diplomas belonging to naval students, study notes, books, and photographs. They are complemented by navigation instruments, shipbuilding tools, and items from the everyday lives of seafarers. The museum also provides historical insights into how old sailing ships were once built and launched in coastal fishing villages.

The Ainaži Firefighting Museum focuses on a different subject. It conveys knowledge about the work and traditions of the Ainaži volunteer firefighting association and honours this history. At the museum, you can try on a firefighter’s helmet and operate a hand siren. This means the exhibition is not limited exclusively to viewing historical objects.
