Mālpils – Culture, Nature and Water Experiences

The round dance hall at the Mālpils Cultural Centre is often used as a concert hall because of its good acoustics. The stated capacity of 550 seats refers to the auditorium; the round dance hall, by contrast, is characterised primarily by its use for concerts and its acoustics.

At the Skulmju family house, the exhibition comprises three rooms open to visitors: Marta and Otto Skulme’s room, Valentīns Skulme’s room and a veranda. From the veranda and the courtyard, there is a view towards the Mergupe. The two rooms are assigned to specific individuals; the veranda is both part of the exhibition and one of the areas offering a view of the river. The house thus combines personal interiors with an outdoor area by the river.

The medieval castle of Mālpils is an archaeological monument of national significance and bears the state protection number 2124. It was built before 1413 on the right bank of the Mergupe to secure transport routes and was first mentioned in written sources in 1413. The dating therefore distinguishes between its earlier construction and the year in which the castle was first documented in writing.

The manor house and the castle represent different historical periods: as a neoclassical architectural monument, the manor house belongs to the 19th century, while the castle is connected with the medieval history of Mālpils. Together with the Cultural Centre and the Skulmju family house, they form a cultural focus that brings architecture, local history and personal memory together.

The Mālpils nature trail runs along the left bank of the Mergupe. It is described as an approximately 6.5 km out-and-back hiking route. The distance therefore refers to the entire route in both directions, not just to a single section along the left bank. When factoring the distance into your excursion planning, you should already take the return to the starting point into account.

The “Wake Mālpils” wakepark offers a Wakestation cable system and a water obstacle park. You can also rent SUP boards there for peaceful outings on a calm section of river. The cable system and water obstacle park are part of the wakepark’s offering, while SUP rental is intended for calm water. This means that activities involving different forms of movement are available side by side, without equating the calm section of river with the obstacle park.

The market in Mālpils village square brings together local farmers, home producers and craftspeople. In addition, “Augusta zemenes” offers its customers strawberries grown in greenhouses. The market thus showcases various groups of local vendors, while greenhouse cultivation of strawberries is the focus at “Augusta zemenes”.

At the “Baložu māja” craft workshop, visitors can try making wooden vessels themselves. Another special feature of the workshop is the production of wooden gingerbread moulds. The workshop thus combines a hands-on activity with a specialised form of woodworking that goes beyond ordinary utility vessels.
