Olaine Municipality: Nature, Culture and Hotels in Latvia

At Līdumu Quarry, Olaine Municipality offers many specific opportunities for outdoor recreation: there are recreation areas with wooden pontoons, a walking path, picnic areas with grills, a playground, facilities for volleyball, football and basketball, and a wake park. The nature trail around Līdumu Quarry is approximately 2.8 kilometres long and suitable for prams. The quarry can be reached by car, bicycle, roller skates or skateboard, as well as on foot via the path between Olaine and Līdumu Quarry.

Nature

Olaine Mežaparks comprises a naturally grown pine forest and a well-equipped area in the centre of Olaine. From May to September, cultural events and open-air film screenings take place on an outdoor stage. The park also has outdoor fitness equipment and a “Meža kaķa” trail for children. Thirteen protected bird species have been recorded in the Melnā ezera bog; during the autumn migration, bean geese and greater white-fronted geese rest there.

A 510-metre-long path features distinctive oak-wood elements. They are used for balance, strength and agility exercises, as well as relaxed recreation. The path in Jaunolaine is located in the forest near Jelgava Street, at Ālupi 1.

Cycling and Trails

The Olaine Velotrase is 220 metres long and forms a circuit with hills of varying heights, bends and ramps. It is a paved cycling track integrated into an existing pine park and is considered the first paved Velotrase in the Pierīga region. Together with the skatepark, it forms a complex where bicycles, mainly BMX bikes, kick scooters, roller skates and skateboards can be used.

Olaine railway station is one of three stations on the 41.6-kilometre Riga–Jelgava railway line. Covered bicycle parking spaces and a bicycle service station are located next to the station.

Culture

The Olaine History and Art Museum has five exhibitions, a modern exhibition hall and a publicly accessible open storage area. The museum offers educational activities, museum education programmes and excursions in the territory of Olaine Municipality. The “Laboratorija” exhibition presents the history of the four major factories: “Biolar”, “Olainfarm”, the glue factory and the plastics recycling factory. It is complemented by an interactive game with 3D solutions.

The “Blokmāju stāsti” cultural route comprises nine stops with augmented reality elements that can be scanned using a smartphone and an app. The planned “Blokmāju stāsti” cultural walk explains how Olaine was planned and built and explores Soviet architecture and life in apartment-block neighbourhoods.

A 45-metre-high water tower in Olaine bears the graffiti artwork “Heirēka!”. The Vidzemes-Kurzemes-Zemgales boundary markers are a state-protected cultural monument and once marked the boundary between the Governorates of Courland and Vidzeme. The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter, completed in 1940, stands in Pēternieki. Olaine Municipality is also home to the municipality’s oldest cultural monument of state significance.

Experiences

In Pēternieki, Maijrozes riding stable offers riding lessons and family celebrations. It also provides stable tours and horseback rides for children; afterwards, picnics can be organised or sausages can be roasted over a campfire. Maijrozes riding stable can be reached by car via the Riga–Jelgava road, the turn-off towards Code and then approximately 2 kilometres further.

“Ooo! Sajūtu darbnīca” combines a shop with candle-making workshops. “Ķiploku pasaule” in Uzvaras Līdums welcomes groups and organises tastings.
